John Coombes

John Coombes

Job Title:

Operations Manager

Description of Role:

The Building Schools for the Future Programme is all about change – for the better.

It’s not just better buildings, although that is an important stepping stone to creating better places in which to educate and learn, to work, play and bring the community together; only the highest standards will do.  No more will we see poorly equipped, decaying buildings and facilities requiring renewal long before the end of their useful life. No more should we see teachers having to worry about whether their school will be open or functional in adverse weather conditions.

I believe that understanding these fundamental influences is essential to my job. It’s not all about contracts; it’s about working with people. It’s not about disputes: it’s about gaining trust and delivering satisfaction. It’s about creativity and innovation; same challenges, different solutions.

My approach to working with our facilities management partners at Babcock who provide the building and grounds maintenance, cleaning, portering and caretaking is one of support and encouragement rather than control and penalty.

Behind all of this is my responsibility for performance monitoring and measurement; again, the positive is emphasised so that we learn from our experiences, provide benchmarks as a tool for continuous improvement

Background

With a background in commercial property investment and facilities management, John has been involved in Public/Private partnership projects in education, healthcare, defence and civic buildings since 1997.
